Four big competitions to keep an eye on this summer
The world’s best freestyle and freeride athletes are beginning to make the annual pilgrimage down to the Southern Hemisphere, not just for pre-winter training, but also for some serious competitions to be won. Look out in particular for members of the GB Park & Pipe team that will be heading south to build on an incredibly successful 2014/2015 winter season.
NZ Winter Games (Cardrona/Coronet Peak – New Zealand)
21st – 30th August
The biggest event in New Zealand promises to be bigger and better than previous years and is set to once again attract many of the world’s best athletes. Cardrona is set to host FIS World Cup halfpipe, big air and slopestyle contests for both skiers and snowboarders, whilst Coronet Peak is home to the Australia New Zealand Cup Alpine races. James Woods finished second in the 2013 event and last year the Swede Jasper Tjader put down this incredible run on the Big Bucks Park:
Mile High (Perisher – Australia)
22nd – 26th August
Perisher is once again to host the Mile High competition on the famous PlayStation Slopestyle course on Front Valley. Last year saw GB’s Billy Morgan claim second and also land the first ever triple cork in a contest on Australian snow. Expect more of the same in the 2015 edition of the event, as well as four days of some of the best après ski anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere.
One Hit Wonder (Thredbo – Australia)
8th – 12th September
For the seventh year running Thredbo is set to build the biggest jump in the Southern Hemisphere for the One Hit Wonder event. It is more than just a regular competition; it is a festival combining some of Australia’s best live music and a unique jump contest. Instead of running a simple 3-jump big air contest, this event has five rounds which start with the skiers putting down their best 360s, followed by their 540s and so on until the final round in which anything goes. Check out the edit from last year – the jump is huge!
Chilean Freeskiing Championship (Tres Valles– Chile)
Although the dates are yet to be finalised, a 4* Freeride World Qualifier event has been confirmed this summer for Chile’s Tres Valles region. Only one level down from a Freeride World Tour level event, some of the very best freeride skiers and boarders are likely to be attracted by the huge number of ranking points available. Expect some epic lines to be ridden and some spectacular footage and images to appear on the event’s Facebook page, especially if the 2013 event is anything to go by –
